The musical experiment that is urban Sax is the product of the accoustic experiment on the space of sound. Everything is done during the concert in order to create the idea of a sound architecture, notably so through the position of the saxophonists. Le story of the group started in 1973, as Gilbert Artman, composer and director, made a certain deal with teh town of Menton: flood the streets of constant music. In order to do so, he called upon 18 saxophonists. Little by little, project after project, the band has grown to be what it is today: 34 musicians, 10 singers and 2 dancers.

L’ expérience musicale d’Urban Sax est le fruit de recherches acoustiques sur la spacialisation du son. Tout est fait durant le concert pour créer l’idée d’une architecture sonore, notamment par le placement de groupes de saxophonistes en cinq points différents entourant le public puis se rejoignant pour la plupart sur une scène centrale. L’histoire du groupe débuta en 1973 lorsque Gilbert Artman, compositeur, metteur en scène et fondateur du groupe, proposa à la ville de Menton d’“ inonder ” ses rues de musique continue. Pour réaliser cela, il fit appel à 18 saxophonistes. De projets en projets, le groupe s’agrandit pour en arriver à la composition actuelle : 30 saxophonistes, 10 choristes, 3 percussionnistes, 1 bassiste, et 2 danseuses.
